The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a nationwide initiative encouraging parents and caregivers to read aloud to their children regularly.

By reading just one book a night, families can achieve the goal of 1000 books in three years while providing their children with essential early literacy skills!

You can learn more about this excellent program by visiting their 1000 Books Before Kindergarten website.

Why 1000 Books?

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood.

Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare them for kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed.

Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

How does the program work?

Start tracking your reading with your child on our 1000 books record sheet! Cross off a circle for each book. Repeated readings count each time – kids love to hear their favorites repeatedly.

Tracker sheets are available in the children’s room or to download below.

When you finish your first 100 book sheet, you and your child will pick a character to place on our chart. Your child will move up the ladder for each sheet you turn in! Children will also receive stickers each time they turn in a sheet.

At 1000 books, you will receive a certificate of completion, a photo opportunity, and a book of your choice!
